Aging Eyes Part 1: Common Vision Problems

Changes in your visual capacity are normal as you grow older, with many eye conditions typically developing in middle age. At Alderwood Optical and Canyon Park Vision Clinic, we are committed to spreading awareness of these conditions. Read on as your trusted eye doctor discusses age-related vision problems as we celebrate Healthy Aging Month this September.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

As you age, your macula, the focal point of your retina, may gradually begin to deteriorate, leading to difficulties seeing things in front of you. Without prompt treatment, this may also result in total and irreversible blindness. While there is no cure for this disease right now, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and having regular eye exams are some ways to control its progression.

Cataracts

Protein and tissue breakdown in your eyes may increase as you age, resulting in cataracts. These opaque areas on your lens prevent light rays from entering your eyes, leading to hazy or cloudy vision. If they are causing significant visual limitations, your reliable eye doctor may suggest surgery to remove them.

Presbyopia

Lens rigidity is another effect of aging. As your natural lenses lose their flexibility, the light-focusing process may be compromised, making it difficult to see close-range objects clearly. We can prescribe progressive addition lenses or bifocals to improve your visual acuity at varying distances. We may also recommend wearing reading glasses when performing close-up work, such as reading or cooking.

Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome develops when either the quality or quantity of your tears is compromised. Your eyes may become red, itchy, and watery when this happens. A sandy or gritty sensation is also common. To improve your health and comfort, your trusted eye doctor may advise applying artificial tear drops. We also suggest eating cold-water fish and similar foods rich in essential fatty acids. We may suggest inserting punctal plugs as well to prevent your tears from draining too rapidly.
