Are You Using Your Scleral Lenses Correctly?

Contact lenses are a convenient, highly effective vision correction method for people who don’t want to deal with eyeglasses. Now, scleral lenses are available for patients that aren’t able to wear traditional contact lenses. These larger and gas-permeable lenses are designed to sit right on top of the sclera, or the white of your eyes.

Scleral lenses are an excellent tool for vision correction. However, they must be used properly to maximize their benefits. Read on as our optical care providers at Alderwood Optical & Canyon Park Vision Clinic share some tips for healthy and safe scleral lens usage.

Rest Your Eyes

Talk to your optometrist about the appropriate length of time you should wear your scleral lenses. Most people are comfortable with 12 to 14 hours of continued use; however, this must be followed by ample rest. Our doctors recommend taking off your lenses at least an hour before you go to bed. Additionally, if you experience fogging in your lenses or any discomfort during the day, remove the lenses and give your eyes a few minutes of rest.

Proper Cleaning

After you’ve removed your scleral lenses, give them a good 20 seconds of rubbing to remove any dust or microorganisms on their surface. You can lengthen or shorten this time depending on the quality of your lens solution, but a good rule of thumb is about 20 seconds.

Listen to Your Doctor

When it comes to caring for your eyes and eyesight, your eye doctor knows best. Always follow their advice and consult with them before making any changes to your scleral lens use.
