Eye Health Resolutions for the New Year

Sadly, many people take their eyes for granted. As we enter a new year, it is important that we make a conscious effort to take better care of ourselves, and our eyes in particular. Fortunately, taking better care of your eyes is pretty easy and, with a little discipline and a tad bit of knowledge, it can help you avoid many eye problems and unnecessary trips to the eye doctor.

Eat Well

It is no surprise that better eye health starts with a good diet. Try to eat food that is rich in nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc and vitamins C and E.

Invest in a Good Pair of Sunglasses

Too much exposure to ultraviolet rays can be damaging to your eyes and will increase your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. Make it a habit to wear sunglasses that block harmful UVA and UVB rays when you’re out in the sun.

Schedule a Visit to Your Eye Doctor

Even if you are not experiencing any vision problems, you should make it a point to visit your eye doctor regularly. Regular eye exams allow for early detection of eye conditions and more effective treatment.

Spend Less Time Staring at Screens

For many people, staring at a screen for hours at a time is a regular part of everyday life. If this is the case for you, remember to take breaks when you’ve been looking at a screen for too long to give your eyes some time to rest. Also, try to avoid looking at bright screens late at night to avoid eye strain and sleep interference.
