How Often Should Eye Prescriptions Be Updated?

Much like your vision, your eye prescription can change over time. You may develop an eye condition, or the symptoms of your refractive error could worsen. That’s why you should regularly have your eyes checked and your eye prescription updated.

How often you need to visit an eye doctor for an eye prescription update depends on various factors. Continue reading to find out the proper frequency of getting your eye prescription updated.

How Often Should You Have Your Eye Prescription Updated?

For some people, their eye prescription changes every year. For others, it happens less frequently – around two or three years. That said, how often you need to have your eye prescription updated depends on your condition.

For example, vision changes can be age-related. If your nearsightedness developed when you were still a child, the problem could worsen as you get older. Nearsightedness usually starts as early as six years old. Then, the condition worsens at around ages 11 to 13 and continues to progress until the late teens or early 20s. However, if you were farsighted when you were a child, the problem could actually improve as you grow older. The improvement usually happens around age nine when the eyes develop and learn to adjust.

Signs You Need to Update Your Eye Prescription

Your brain recognizes the changes in your vision and tries to compensate for these changes. This can result in frequent headaches, which is a sign you need to visit your eye doctor to have your eye prescription updated.

When you squint, your blurry eyes can focus on objects more clearly. However, it’s an uncomfortable and unhealthy way to see, especially during the evening. If you’re squinting often even while wearing your eyeglasses or contact lenses, it could mean your vision has changed

The more your eyes strain to see objects in front of you, the more easily they’ll become fatigued. Eye fatigue can be a symptom of allergies, illness or lack of sleep. But oftentimes, it’s due to prolonged use of digital screens. Make sure to take a break from staring at a screen to relieve your eyes from fatigue. If this doesn’t work and you’ve been suffering from eye fatigue for days, go to your eye doctor, and have your eye prescription updated.
