Types of Contact Lens Solutions and Their Uses

Disinfecting your contact lenses with a solution is important for both cleanliness and safety. Keeping your lenses clean prevents eye infection. Your eye doctor will recommend the appropriate solution for your specific contact lenses.

Here’s a list of different types of contact lens solutions from your trusted eye care provider, Alderwood Optical & Canyon Park Vision Clinic.

1. Multipurpose Solution

This all-in-one solution can be used to clean, disinfect and store soft contact lenses.

2. Daily Cleaners

Daily cleaners are only meant for cleaning the built-up debris from your contact lens. You use this type of solution by placing a few drops on your palm and rubbing the lenses as instructed. A multipurpose solution should then be used for rinsing off the daily cleaner, disinfecting and storing contact lenses.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide-Based Systems

Your eye doctor may prescribe a hydrogen peroxide-based solution if you’re allergic to ingredients found in multipurpose solutions. You need to use a special case that comes with the solution, which converts the hydrogen peroxide to a saline solution over time. If you use another type of case with a hydrogen peroxide solution, it may cause burning, stinging and redness once you use your lenses.

4. Saline Solution

Saline is used for rinsing after cleaning and disinfecting contact lenses with a different solution. For example, before wearing lenses cleaned and stored with a hydrogen peroxide-based solution, you have to rinse them with saline.

5. Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Care Systems

RGP care systems are used for hard contact lenses that require several solutions for wetting, cleaning and disinfecting. Do not use this care system for soft contact lenses. Talk to your eye care provider before using any product for your RGP contact lenses.
