After Laser Eye Surgery: What Should You Expect?

Laser eye surgery can correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. This procedure typically takes around 30 minutes and involves a quick and easy recovery. It shouldn’t take long before you can go back to your daily routine after surgery.

A Few Hours After

During the first few hours after the surgery, keep your eyes closed and avoid looking at bright lights. If you feel discomfort, your eye doctor may prescribe medication for pain and eye drops to help keep your eyes lubricated and protected against infections.

The First Day After

Avoid activities that can cause eye strain during the first day after surgery. If possible, minimize the use of digital devices such as televisions, cellphones, computers and tablets. Use the protective eye shield given to you at night to protect your eyes. It will be safe to drive as soon as your vision is clear enough. You may need to see your eye doctor or optometrist for a follow-up appointment.

One to Two Weeks Post-Surgery

A week to two after surgery, you should be able to resume your normal exercise routine. However, you should still avoid contact sports for at least a month. When going out, make sure to wear sunglasses for protection against UV light. Don’t wear makeup or any products around your eyes. Avoid swimming for at least two weeks after surgery.

A Month Post-Surgery

One month after surgery, you can resume strenuous activities like sports. You should always wear appropriate eye protection for the sport you’re participating in.

Three to Six Months Post-Surgery

Your eyes will continue to heal, and your vision will gradually improve three to six months after surgery. However, if you have severe myopia, it could take longer for your eyes to heal.
