Lighting Tips to Reduce Eye Strain

Many people who spend hours a day working on a computer complain of eye strain. One of the ways to alleviate the symptoms of eye strain is to improve the lighting in your workspace. Read on as we share some tips.

  • Adjust the brightness of your screen to a more comfortable level. In addition to reducing the brightness of your screen, you can also try turning on night mode, which minimizes the amount of blue light coming from your screen.
  • Avoid glare. Move your workstation so that you’re not facing a window or other light source. The glare from a bright light can force your eyes work extra hard to focus.
  • Reduce ambient lighting. If you’re working under bright fluorescent lighting, your eyes may be suffering. Turn off the overhead light and invest in a table lamp instead for a softer glow.
  • Practice the 20-20-20 rule. After 20 minutes of screen time, rest your eyes by looking at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps your eyes readjust, minimizing eye strain and eye dryness.
  • Wear computer eyeglasses. If you’re still suffering from eye strain, consider investing in computer eyeglasses to help minimize the amount of blue light that reaches your eyes.

Use natural light. Instead of relying on artificial light sources, open your windows. To diffuse overly bright sunlight, use blinds or curtains for that dampening effect.
