Optical Care: Autoimmune Diseases and Their Effects

Proper optical care is very important for everyone, especially those with autoimmune diseases. In today’s post, we discuss how autoimmune diseases can affect your eye health and how we can help.

Autoimmune Diseases That Can Affect the Eyes

There are a number of autoimmune diseases that affect the eyes. Some of these are caused by inflammation, while others have different causes. Here are the most common autoimmune diseases that can affect your visual health:

Lupus

Lupus can cause inflammation of the eyes, leading to symptoms including blurred vision, headaches, sore eyes, dry eyes and light sensitivity.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis can cause your conjunctiva–the clear membrane covering the underside of your eyelids and your sclera–to become inflamed. This can lead to eye pain and redness. If you’re unsure whether symptoms are caused by psoriasis or allergies, it is best to consult an eye doctor.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common autoimmune diseases that impacts eye health. The condition can cause damage to the small blood vessels in the rear of your eyes, potentially leading to blindness.

Prevention Starts With Detection

The best thing you can do to prevent vision loss from autoimmune diseases is to visit your eye doctor for regular eye exams. The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises that adults should undergo regular eye exams starting at age 40. People with autoimmune diseases should undergo eye exams every six months regardless of age.
