Understanding the Risks of Central Serous Retinopathy

The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye, responsible for transmitting signals to the brain so you can see. Central serous retinopathy causes fluid buildup in the retina, which can impair vision.

In today’s post, your optometrist at Alderwood Optical explains everything you need to know about this condition.

Risk Factors and Causes

Doctors have not yet discovered the exact cause of central serous retinopathy, but believe that stress can trigger it. Your body produces a hormone called cortisol when you are stressed, which can cause inflammation. This can damage the retina and affect your vision. In addition, studies show that men between ages 30 and 50 are more likely to develop this eye problem than older adults and women.

Symptoms

Blurry vision and darkening of the central vision are two of the most common symptoms of central serous retinopathy. Objects may also appear farther away than they really are, and the color white may seem duller for people with this eye condition. Note, however, that some patients do not experience any changes in their vision, most especially when the fluid buildup occurs in areas away from the macula. Get in touch with your optometrist or eye doctor if you experience these symptoms.

Treatment Options

In many cases, the fluid building up in the retina often drains by itself after several weeks. Your doctor will monitor whether the fluid is draining and if it’s not, they may recommend photodynamic therapy, thermal laser treatment or medication.
