What Is Orthokeratology and What Are Its Benefits?

One of the newest treatment options for myopia or nearsightedness is orthokeratology, or more popularly known as ortho-k. It is also used to treat other refractive eye conditions.

What Is Ortho-K and What Does It Do for You?

With orthokeratology, your optometrist will reshape your corneas using specially designed contact lenses so that refractive errors can be corrected. This means that light can enter your eyes properly without refraction, allowing you to see more clearly.

Ortho-k contact lenses are not the same as regular contacts. You only wear these special lenses at night while you sleep. The lenses are made from a gas-permeable material so that your eyes still receive enough oxygen to keep them healthy.

An ortho-k lens for every eye is different, which means your optometrist will design your lenses specifically for your eyes only. As you sleep, your ortho-k lenses apply subtle pressure to your corneas, reshaping them. When you wake up the next morning, you’ll notice that your eyesight has improved once you remove your contacts.

You have to wear the ortho-k contact lenses every night when you go to sleep because these lenses work progressively. Complete eye clarity is possible for up to 48 hours after removing the ortho-k lenses. If you ever decide to stop your ortho-k treatment, your eyesight will return to what it once was before ortho-k.

What Are the Benefits of Ortho-K?

There are several benefits that you can gain from orthokeratology treatment.

First of all, it’s safe for most people, including children. People who have corneal abnormalities and are not able to wear regular contact lenses without discomfort can also try ortho-k.

You may be able to stop wearing regular contact lenses or prescription glasses because ortho-k already gives you vision clarity for up to 48 hours.

Ortho-k is reversible, so your eyesight will return to what it was before if you stop the treatment.

Ortho-k does not involve any surgery. It is a painless solution to myopia and other refractive problems.
